It’s been a difficult few years in India, with political turmoil and the spectre of corruption crippling the country’s business sector. Against that backdrop even the country’s leading firms have had a tough time.
With the election of a new prime minister earlier this year, however, the political paralysis has begun to ease and one firm in particular has set out an ambitious growth strategy. Amarchand & Mangaldas currently has just over 700 lawyers in its ranks but managing partner Shardul Shroff says the firm “may surprise [itself] by crossing 800 lawyers this year”.
To help it on its way Amarchand has just launched an office in Gurgaon, its eighth in the country, and plans to tap into work coming from the wealth of Fortune 500 companies that are based in the National Capital Region city.
With no new partner hires to staff the office as yet, though, it may need more than just good fortune to hit its headcount target.
