  • Lets hope this goes better for the SJ Berwin partners than the Freehills merger has gone for the Herbert Smith partners...

  • It's not a merger! It's an association of different businesses... But I guess clients won't really care. It's a good marketing/branding campaign for them. So no one will be affected.

  • I am confused.
Is this a merger ,as the headline suggests,or SJB opting to join three other separate partnerships who perceive there to be benefit in the KWM Sino-Pacific brand ?
If so the comparison with Herbies appears misplaced.

  • Clearly this is a merger and will ultimately lead to full financial integration, but even at the start there will be combined management and operations. It is clearly a lot more than an alliance.

  • Well, we all know how Frankenstein ended up. Very sad.

It's true there is more to a 'merger' than sharing partner profits (though it helps...), but you'll find the Chinese Government has no intention of permitting PRC law firms to merge financially with Western law firms. Insiders there report they see about a 0% chance of that happening. In which case, they will not merge financially for decades, perhaps never.

  • Gearing up for a US merger, then?

  • Clear parallels between this news story and the momentous coming together of Bond Pearce and Dickinson Dees to form Bond Dickinson on 1 May 2013.

  • This firm is a US merger away from becoming the next Knights.

  • Stephen Kon looks like an oompah loompah in the group photo. So cute. Don't you just want to pick him up and put him in your pocket?

  • SJB, So you didn't fancy merging with the might of a full service law firm like DWF, who are going to be a "top 20" firm then! What have you done!? I do hope you haven't rebuffed Andrew Leaitherlands advances lol!

  • Bit harsh on DWF. They've risen up the rankings like no other firm in the last 5 years.

I don't understand why DWF get criticised.
