Paul Hastings has announced changes to its China leadership team following two incumbents’ moving back to the US.
Paul Hastings has appointed corporate partner Sammy Li as its new Hong Kong office chair, succeeding predecessor Derek Roth. Meanwhile, the firm’s existing Shanghai chairman David Wang will take over management responsibilities of the Beijing office from Joel Rothstein.
Roth was appointed to the management role on 1 February 2013 after Neil Torpey stepped down following a ten-year tenure to return to New York as a full time fee-earning corporate partner. A partner in the firm’s private equity real estate practice, he will relocate back to the firm’s Los Angeles office after having spent the past four years in Hong Kong.
Along with Roth, the firm’s longest serving lawyer in Asia and real estate partner Joel Rothstein, who has spent more than 16 years in the region, will also relocate to Los Angeles. Rothstein’s relocation comes just one year after he was appointed to the Beijing office chair role last February.
Whilst in the US, the two partners will continue to play important roles in cross-border Asia-US real estate and private equity investment practice.
Paul Hastings noted that the relocation of the two partners to the US signals the firm’s recognition of the growing importance of servicing global clients in cross border investment flows to and from the major financial centres in Asia and the US.
