  • It's all very well being first in China, but being the first to open a law firm branch in China doesn't guarantee success or even "first cab off the rank" opportunities. There are guys in the offshore business that have been working the China market for years and who have managed to sew a lot of it up already without a formal presence: it's a pretty safe bet that if Appleby could have achieved that level of success without incurring the overhead they would have. So this is really an attempt by Appleby to correct a Far East strategy that has failed hitherto.
