Irwin Mitchell real estate partner Rob Thompson will succeed Jon Vivian as head of the firm’s London real estate team on 1 May.
He specialises in investment and development work and complex corporate real estate and finance transactions.
Recently he led the team that advised Wells Fargo/Lone Star on the acquisition of Eurohypo’s £4bn commercial real estate loan book (12 August 2013).
Thompson will work with Vivian as he transfers to the new role, with additional support from senior London real estate partners Jo Footitt and Lewis Myers.
Thompson said he would continue to work closely with key clients, while taking on his additional responsibilities.
“Jon remains an important part of the team and will be able to concentrate on maintaining relations with our major clients as well as being an ambassador for the practice as a whole. We have worked together closely over the past 10 years and will continue to do so”, he added.
Thompson was one of the four partners in the 20-strong real estate team that came over with Jon Vivian from SJ Berwin to found Irwin Mitchell’s London real estate practice in November 2010 (27 September 2010).
The team brought clients including Prestbury, Max Property Group, Gazeley, British Land, Redevco, Raven Russia and Honda with them to the firm when they joined.
They have since added clients such as Ellandi Retail Fund, Caudwell Properties, HSS Hire Service Group, Mercer Real Estate Partners, Lone Star, Tishman Speyer and Wells Fargo.
Irwin Mitchell national head of real estate Paul Firth said: “The London office is extremely important to us as an access to blue chip and an increasingly international client base.
“Real estate now represents 33 per cent of Irwin Mitchell’s commercial practice and I will continue to work with Rob and Jon as we develop the practice further.” The London team now consists of 10 partners and 15 fee earners.
Irwin Mitchell has made a series of strategic hires into its commercial arm over the last 12 months including signing up former DLA Piper Birmingham managing partner Chris Rawstron as head of its business legal services team in the city (6 March 2013), the appointment of Brown Rudnick’s intellectual property head Georgie Collins (9 September 2013) and the appointment of Pinsent Masons’ former dispute resolution and litigation head Nigel Kissack as its head of commercial litigation after a two-year recruitment drive (17 October 2013).
The firm’s commercial business generated revenues of £40m in the last financial year (17 May 2013).
