Pinsent Masons is aiming at boosting the commercial focus of its Birmingham real estate team with the hire of Shoosmiths partner Joel Kordan.
Kordan will take up a position in Pinsent’s 40-strong Birmingham-based real estate team in a move to re-focus the practice from urban regeneration towards more commercial contracts.
His work for regional and national investor and developer clients including a number of public-private asset-backed ventures goes to the heart of the firm’s aim to secure more private work.
According to head of Pinsent Masons’ Birmingham team Tom Johnson the firm is growing in the region and seeking more residential and food retail developments as well as snaring more work for large energy clients.
Kordan has a strong reputation in the region, having helped establish Shoosmiths’ Birmingham office in 2003 and leading it until 2011 before becoming a development and real estate specialist at the firm.
By the time he stood down as Shoosmiths Birmingham office head in 2011 it had become the firm’s largest commercial office with 175 staff.
Kordan advised on Daresbury Science Park in Liverpool and has acted for a series of private clients, as well as being lead partner advising University Hospital Birmingham and acting for Birmingham City Council.
He will join the firm as it aims to win more mandates like the high-profile contract for London Array – the world’s largest offshore wind farm and a joint venture between DONG Energy, E.ON and Masdar.
He is not the only new recruit set to join the firm – the Birmingham team are currently on the hunt for two more lawyers to join its growing team.
