King & Wood Mallesons SJ Berwin (KWMSJB) has been appointed by SuperGroup, the corporate group behind the Superdry brand, to handle its continental European real estate matters, as part of a wider review of the fashion group’s external advisers.
The firm advised on its first transaction for the new client this month, advising on the leasing of a 684 sq metre retail area in Frankfurt shopping centre, MyZeil. Munich and Frankfurt-based real estate partner Lars Reubekeul led on the deal, alongside counsel Karin Elske.
The acquisition is part of a growth-push by SuperGroup, which last year saw global revenues increase by 14.9 per cent to £360.4m. It is set to fast track its expansion in the UK and Europe, adding as many as 50 new stores.
KWMSJB was approached by the brand to pitch for the mandate, and took a creative approach to the presentation.
UK real estate co-head William Boss said: “On the pitch we got our people across Europe to send photos of themselves and various family members outside SuperGroup and Superdry shops around Europe. We wanted to demonstrate our continental depth, and we had some great photos.”
He added: “It’s really pleasing as it’s international rather than advice on UK acquisitions.”
It is thought that Ashurst formerly advised the company on aspects of its German strategy, including receiving a handful of real estate mandates in Europe in the past.
Cheltenham-based firm BPE Solicitors will continue to advise SuperGroup on its domestic real estate work.
In 2010, SuperGroup’s longstanding adviser Fox Williams advised on the IPO of the business on the main market of the London Stock Exchange. Memery Crystal acted for the nominated adviser and broker on the admission, while Irwin Mitchell won a role advising SuperGroup on restructuring aspects in advance of the deal.
SuperGroup appointed a new general counsel, Lindsay Beardsell in August 2013. Beardsell joined from Gazprom Energy, where she established an integrated legal and regulatory affairs function.
Beardsell added that the panel review is an “ongoing process”.
