London litigation boutique Hage Aaronson has expanded its international reach by setting up a referral relationship with New York disputes firm Gregory Joseph.
As part of the deal Hage Aaronson, set up in March by tax silk Graham Aaronson QC with former One Essex Court barrister Joe Hage (11 March 2013), will become Joseph Hage Aaronson, reflecting the referral relationship between the firms.
The combined force will provide competition for Quinn Emmanuel Urquhart & Sullivan, which until now has dominated the specialist London disputes market for international cases.
The New York firm was launched in 2001 by a group of former Fried Frank Harris Shriver & Jacobson partners led by Gregory Joseph (26 September 2001). He had been at Fried Frank for 22 years before leaving the firm with a group of lawyers to launch his own boutique.
Joseph is widely considered a leading litigator in the US. In 2011 he ended a term as president of the American College of Trial Lawyers, an invitation-only, honorary society composed of the top litigators in the US and Canada.
The firm is known in New York for handling big-ticket complex cases for major corporates.
Other lawyers include Pamela Jarvis, a former litigation partner at Fried Frank, and later general counsel of the healthcare subsidiary of New York Life Insurance Company, and partner Paul J Bschorr, who formerly chaired the litigation practice at White & Case.
In 2011, for example, Joseph successfully represented Citigroup in a $268m dispute against Morgan Stanley in a battle related to credit default swaps. Quinn Emmanuel represented Morgan Stanley.
The tie-up with Hage Aaronson will give the firm it’s first beak into the London market while giving Hage Aaronson access to a New York client base.
Since its launch in March the London boutique has added to its lawyer base through the hire of Blackstone Chambers firmer head Thomas Beazley QC (24 April 2013).
It has also secured its first Supreme Court win with partner Simon Whitehead, who joined the firm from Dorsey & Whitney in March (4 March 2013), acting for Marks & Spencer in a major tax dispute (23 May 2013).
The firm is now planning further expansion and has taken additional space to accommodate new recruits.
The move comes after Texas firm Andrews Kerth raided Chadbourne & Parke for a three-person arbitration team in London.
Chadbourne arbitration partner Melanie Willems is to join the firm as international arbitration head, bringing with her Chadbourne senior associate Markus Esly, who joins as partner, and associate Robert Blackett (16 September 2013).
