India’s former solicitor general Gopal Subramaniam has joined 3 Verulam Buildings (3VB) as an associate member as the set aims to further expand into Asia market.
Subramaniam is understood to have met Ali Malek QC, who was appointed head of 3VB in 2009 (15 October 2009), in recent months. He was solicitor general from 2009 to 2011 and served as chairman of the Bar Council of India from 2010 to 2011.
3VB senior practice manager Paul Cooklin said the set is becoming increasingly involved in dispute resolution in India and that the strategy was to grow in the region.
“There’s been a significant increase in demand for services in India and Asia more generally,” he said, adding that he could not comment further due to the confidential nature of the work. “Gopal’s arrival will only consolidate [this].”
Malek also pointed to 3VB’s growing focus on Asia, saying in a statement that Subramaniam’s decision reflects 3VB’s “growing stature” in the region.
It is the second London civil set to attract new tenants from India with a view to growing the number of instructions coming out of the region. In June Blackstone Chambers expanded through the addition of leading Indian barrister Harish Salve (19 July 2013).
Salve is a regular advisor in India to the metal conglomerate Tata Group as well as advising billionaire Lakshmi Mittal and Arcelor Mittal on top-level disputes.
