  • Odd decision. Leanne was surely next up for partnership in her team. She'll have to re-start now at Lovells. Massive loss to SJB though for sure.

  • So HogLov gets 2 and loses 3. A net loss. Would it be that all the song and dance around strategically growing the PE team was all er hogwash?

  • I'm really not surprised that Leanne's leaving, and wish her the best of luck. Excellent lawyer, insanely organised, on top of all work streams, and above all a funny, warm, engaging person. And that's from a non-corporate bod (no longer at SJB for the record) who often finds it a displeasure to work as support on corporate matters.

  • Bravo Rob with that throwaway comment about people coming and going. I don't see much coming, to be frank.

  • Leanne is a nice individual and a solid lawyer who will be missed by many however, to say 'star PE associate' is nothing more than the Lawyer trying to put a spin on what is essentially a non-story. Day's comment says it all.

  • "Rapid expansion for HL's PE team" - really! How is this expansion? Greenough is retiring, 3 are leaving, and two are joining ... so they're rapidly expanding on a net basis by minus 2??

  • I can't bale Leanne, and wish her well. Bright girl with a bright future, she'll do well.

  • Had no idea Leanne was leaving! She'll definitely be missed by her team and also others across the firm who have to deal with corporate. Sunshine on a rainy day, such a shame.

  • I've worked across Leanne on the other side and she is totally unflappable - calms everything down and was mega efficient. I'm sure I can guess at her reasons for leaving given SJB's rep! Wish her well.

  • SJB has lost all its talented PE associates in the last 6 months

  • Had no idea! So pleased for this sensational lady who deserves better than what's on offer at Berwins.

  • Leanne is excellent ,switched on, poised and elegant and will do very well. She'll especially flourish outside the cages of SJB. Good luck Leanne!

  • Oh SJ Berwin. Will you ever, ever, EVER learn? Rule number one - a talented workforce is essential to the success of a business. Please teach your partners how to retain staff!

  • Leanne is only leaving because Ed is. He's like her surrogate father.

  • Troubled times for SJB.

  • Blow for SJB deals team, no question. But it's the latest in a string of blows. They will have nobody left.

  • Just looked up Leanne. Impressive list of deals, and she's been a Berwiner for NINE YEARS!! How? They are.

Unsuitable or offensive? Report this comment

  • Over the years I've seen Leanne have her soul progressively sucked away by SJB ... almost. She's also maintained a bright disposition, but that place is a drain on people with even the rosiest of outlooks. I'm sure that the move will be re-energizing and be the right platform for her.

  • Why is she walking away from partnership?

Unsuitable or offensive? Report this comment

  • Huge loss to that team. They'll survive obviously, but you can't easily replace a home-grown, 7 year PQE associate who not only has the technical capability but who also is so highly regarded internally.

  • Leanne's a joy to work with. I salute her for her time at SJB, and wish her the best of luck with everything.

  • Lovells has always had the problem that, as a mid-market firm, the stars will leave for MC or US firms. This has been happening for years and years, eg Jonny Myers (to CC) and Marco Compagnoni (to Weil), etc.

  • Only SJB haters could gatecrash an article that is NOT primarily about SJB!! Katten Muchin, fear not, we heard the bit about you growing your PE practice!

Unsuitable or offensive? Report this comment

  • This shouldn't be a forum for appraising Leanne Moezi. It goes without saying that she is a good and experienced PE lawyer. Instead, the focus should entirely be on WHY she left when she seemingly had good partnership prospects there, why so many associates left in the months before her, and what on earth is going on over at SJB to cause this resentment.

  • "KWMSJB" - what a ridiculous name for a firm and an even more ridiculous acronym.

Unsuitable or offensive? Report this comment

  • Odd that Philip Watkins is taking two associates with him. I didn't think his practice was big enough.

Looking forward to Ed and Leanne joining the firm.

  • Any chance of keeping a little bit of perspective here? KWM have lost a reasonably compotent mid-level associate. Life will most certainly go on.

Unsuitable or offensive? Report this comment

  • Anon @ 11:27pm - it's more the fact that the SJB PE deal team has lost circa 10 associates (somebody correct me if I am wrong) in the space of a year.

  • SJB need to address associate departures in corporate.

Unsuitable or offensive? Report this comment

  • Highly irritated that some of my comments aren't being published, when they are not offensive in the slightest. Has The Lawyer had a telling off from KWMSJB? What happened to freedom of speech?

Unsuitable or offensive? Report this comment

  • If anybody is offended by comments, then they should report so. It is not for The Lawyer to determine should be blocked and not posted. People have an opinion on the situation and should be allowed to voice that.

  • The KWMSJB-bashing is unmerited. As a current KWMSJB employee (not corporate), I can say that it is a good place to work - the work is challenging, partners are generally supportive and there is plenty of room for career progression. It is not for everyone and the expectations are often high.

The recent combination presents challenges and opportunities, like every combination but most people are hopeful that it will work. Cool down everyone.

And for the record, Leanne was here for 9 years.

Unsuitable or offensive? Report this comment

  • It is hardly credible that KWM have lost 10 associates from one team in the last 6 months, but if the attitude of the management is reflected in Day's quote, then they need to look far for a reason.

It will be interesting to see if they make anyone up in this year's partnership round.

  • To "anonymous caller" - it's not SJB bashing. The comments are about that particular corporate team. I'm sure the partners in your department are supportive, but the consensus seems to be that that's not so for the corporate bods.

Unsuitable or offensive? Report this comment

  • Serious changes needed to that team at SJB. All of the good people are being driven out.

Unsuitable or offensive? Report this comment

  • Do you people have jobs to do? This is FacebookLite. And KWMSJB is an abbreviation, not an acronym.

Unsuitable or offensive? Report this comment

  • Sarah @ 1:52: yet the team hasn't had a "serious" partner loss in years, apart from arguably Harris, and still seem to get plenty of mandates, including some juicy ones. It can't be all bad!

Unsuitable or offensive? Report this comment

  • Leanne is a phenomenal lawyer and fabulous person. I am sure her presence will be missed at SJB. I wish her every luck in the world. Ed and Leanne are a dream team so I am confident the move will be a great success.

Unsuitable or offensive? Report this comment

  • Will be intriguing to see if Harris takes a bigger team than just Moezi - she seems quite senior (up for partnership soon?) so it would make sense if the team included a junior.

Unsuitable or offensive? Report this comment

  • Steven Davis and Tim Wright are great lawyers with credible practices at SJB - as long as they are there, everybody cool down.

Unsuitable or offensive? Report this comment

  • Anon @ 5:57 - I think HL has a sufficient number of juniors for them for the time being. Time will tell though.

Unsuitable or offensive? Report this comment

  • Nobody else is leaving with them. They are not taking a junior. Lovells is sufficiently resourced. More so than SJB by all accounts.

Unsuitable or offensive? Report this comment

  • SJB needs to sort out its associate attrition rates. That is evident. Seems like Hogan Lovells may need to do the same if it's lost two associates with Watkins.

Unsuitable or offensive? Report this comment

  • As long as there are associates, there will be associate attrition. The challenge for any firm is spotting when it begins to be a real problem, and then addressing it. Sadly, the fact that associates do leave all the time for a variety of reasons, often obscures the issue and makes it harder for partners to realise and accept when it has become a problem. However, one associate leaving, or two associates leaving, does not mean SJ or HL are suddenly in terminal decline.

Unsuitable or offensive? Report this comment

  • But Lovells have replaced Watkins team - with Ed and Leanne. Not sure I understand then the last sentence of the article.

Unsuitable or offensive? Report this comment

  • Let's look at the facts. On paper. Homegrown associate - 7 years qualified - seemingly well-liked and more than competent - good prospects, would've made it. Why, then, would she leave? I genuinely don't know LM and have never worked at SJB (small mercies), but the reasons HAVE to be one or all of: (a) money; (b) culture; (c) path to partnership. That's it. If she's not going in-house at that level, then she's clearly wanting to pursue a career in private practice (gosh knows why). On that basis, then I'm sorry SJB but you absolutely do need to address your attrition rates! You shouldn't be losing long-serving associates because of (a), (b) or (c) type reasons.

Rather enjoying these types of articles and the comments that ensue! Good reading to break up the monotony of the day.
