  • To bring some much needed balance to the comments - SJB is not in a crisis situation. We all read the league tables and it still firmly has a place at the top or amongst the top. Ed Harris has certainly contributed to that position and result with some high profile work, but there is other talent at the firm who will work hard to retain the department's position.

I wish Ed well, but please - a reality check on the bigger picture.

  • Ed hired me at SJB, although I never worked for him directly, seemed like an intelligent and all round nice guy. When I asked him why he moved from FF to SJB, he told me it was SJB making all the noise in the PE space which he wanted a part of. Don't really see the attraction to Lovells but wish him the best of luck, I am sure he has made an informed decision.

  • Hahaha oh well Lovells! He has no clients!

  • It’s a real shame Bond Dickenson didn’t get Ed on board. They could’ve provided the right platform.

  • Hilarious to see SJB doing the predictable poisonous fight back In fact, quite pathetic but in keeping with the ethos. I have worked with Ed. He is a great lawyer but also a really nice chap. Pity none of the others in his team could learn from him.

  • Provided his clients go with him, then it really doesn't matter whether Harris is at Berwins, Lovells, Simpson Thatcher, Burges Salmon or, indeed, Bond Dickinson. It's him they are with, not the firm.

  • Where is Julian Hedgefund? He usually has something to say on a Berwins story.

  • Ed has the ability and talent to be the next big name in PE. The partners he is leaving behind know it, Lovells can obviously see it, and he will do well.

  • If a partner isn't leaving for more money or a bigger / better brand, then that tells you everything you need to know about the culture and environment said partner is leaving behind.

  • Amazed at some of the comments on here. Surely more suited to Roll on Friday than The Lawyer?

That being said, well done to Ed. Don't know him, but know SJ Berwin and immature bunch of individuals in corporate.

  • Very interesting move and a good one indeed - he won't be the last partner to leave SJB either!

  • Ed stood out in that team for being intelligent, energetic and very very personable. He's brought Leanne up to be the same way. Class act, they're better off out of there.

  • I have no connection with this story, but I have to comment - 65 comments and counting! What is going on here? Surely not all of the comments can be from SJB's marketing team and/or embittered/relieved ex-SJB types, or entirely motivated by the aesthetic merits of Ed Harris and/or Leanne Moezi.

Finally, agree that Ed was great in The Rock, but he was awesome in Apollo 13.

  • Can't wait to meet Ed "the Hunk" Harris!

Unsuitable or offensive? Report this comment

  • If he really is such a high flyer then he won't fit in very well at Lovells, which is such a hum drum, indifferent, unremarkable, mid mid-market firm going nowhere fast.

  • Good for him - better off out of that snake pit. Congratulations.

  • Like others, I do somewhat question the move to Hogans as although they have a much better corporate practice and general profile, their PE practice is not that established. However, I am sure this can only be a success for him and indeed Hogans. Plus, he's out of that hideous SJB team.

  • If Davis leaves, SJB's corporate team is over.

Unsuitable or offensive? Report this comment

  • If Davis also leaves, agree that SJB's corporate team is as good as over.

Unsuitable or offensive? Report this comment

  • That's not fair actually - Tim Wright is a very credible partner and is a leaving, well known name in the industry. The rest (bar him and Davis) - pah, neither here not there.

  • Just had this story forwarded to me - 69 comments?! Wow. A lot of venom for SJB.

  • Late to the party, but just reading this now. I do feel sorry for Berwins - wait, hear me out. I am ex-SJB and fully support Rob Day and his vision for the firm. Anybody who has spoken to him knows that he is the nicest, most genuine, intelligent man in our profession. So it does sadden me to see his firm get villified time and time again.

Having said of all that ... I also have absolutely no time for any of the corporate partners - meaning those in Ed's team and not the other parts of the corporate department. Unless you have worked there, you cannot understand how spiteful and childish they are as a group. Not outwardly - sure, you may even think you have friendships with them - "banter" - that they're alright guys. But none of them can be trusted, and I'm not surprised that Ed (who was an exception in that team) is leaving. Wish him all the best, I am sure he will make a success of the move - all the more so if he takes his team.

As for the state of affairs he leaves behind - as somebody else mentioned further up, Berwins 100% need to bring in lateral partners to that team if it is to sustain or, indeed, grow it's reputation.

  • Agreed re Tim Wright. He is switched on, dynamic and charismatic. All is not lost if he's still in the team.

Also fully support Rob Day, but sadly he does not compensate for those in Ed and Tim's team.

  • SJB corporate is what it is - why are people on here trying to say it will collapse without certain partners?! It will continue on and will merrily occupy the mid / lower-mid market space and do very well. I can't speak for the individuals as I don't know any of them - a good thing judging by these comments - but I doubt their corporate team is going to come to a grinding halt.

As regards the comment on laterals - there are certainly a lot of fish in the pond at the moment if SJB wants to go fishing ...

  • Ed is a great lawyer, a technical genius and a genuinely nice guy - I wish him all the best with the move. Leanne is a top Class A girl and I also wish her well with whatever she decides to do.

As for SJB ... the comments are unfair, but having worked there myself a few years ago now I do understand the bitterness. I disagree though that the team is at an end - they have great names left there (however unpleasant) and a great practice, and the merger will I'm sure only bring positive opportunity. Best of luck to all involved.

  • Sorry, but I don't understand why this article has had so much attention?

Unsuitable or offensive? Report this comment

  • I have no connection with this story whatsoever - not with SJ Berwin, not with any of the individuals.

However, having been in this industry for 20+ years and being a bit of an old codger, I have to say how disgusted I am with some of the comments on here. Since when were lawyers "celebrities" and when did it become "okay" to name individuals and make personal remarks, whether complimentary or not? I'm sure that Leanne Moezi, Steven Davis and Tim Wright did not expect in any measure to get appraised in this article. Indeed, is it right or fair that even Ed Harris has been appraised in this way? Treated like a piece of meat in some cases?

People who are commenting should please be mindful that these 4 people are professionals and have careers to preserve - clients will be reading this article too. Further, It doesn't take much effort to know who the "other partners" (allegedly horrendous and not worth their salt) are that the comments refer to if one looks at the SJ Berwin corporate partner list, and frankly it is unfair and offensive.

  • Agree that Tim Wright is excellent.

  • Tim Wright is fantastic, but he's too good for Berwins and I highly doubt he'll stay. Ed is a loss for the team, for sure, but great hire for Hogans.

  • Only just saw this, despite hearing about it and being told to look at this article and the comments! 83 comments?? And counting?

Worked with Ed Harris and very bright guy - if a little disorganised (at least that was my impression) - but seriously intelligent and creative. I can certainly understand why He's leaving based on what I presume his reasons to be, and wish him the best of luck at Lovells. I would have thought Leanne Hill will also go unless Berwins are persuasive enough, but very unfair to speculate in a forum such as this.

  • several comments on this site are talking about 10 associates leaving SJB in the last 6 months/year - that is just not credible. where is this figure coming from? can anyone substantiate?

Unsuitable or offensive? Report this comment

  • It's actually 8 in a year from that team - and it's correct. I am one such leaver.

Unsuitable or offensive? Report this comment

  • Sounds like some merger-related re-sizing at SJ's - cutting costs (i.e. dead wood) and having a smaller pool of associates do the same work!

Unsuitable or offensive? Report this comment

  • To the comment about re-sizing - what, to a pool of junior associates?? I don't think so.

Unsuitable or offensive? Report this comment

  • Nope - it's not merger related re-sizing. The associates that have left are NOT dead wood! On the contrary. They've had Leanne Moezi obviously … Liam Arthur who went to Debevoise … a couple of associates who went to K&E …. These were associates who were the foundation of the team.

Unsuitable or offensive? Report this comment

  • Agreed. They have not been pushed out, that's ridiculous! They were all highly regarded. A chap called Nadim left too for DLA, who was very senior. The team is poorer without all of them. They need to sort.
