  • I wonder if anyone has done some analysis to determine what percentage, when a firm begins to go a bit wobbly, of the recent lateral hires are the first to jump ship.

  • Congratulations to him.

  • Oh SJ Berwin, SJ Berwin, SJ Berwin. Will you ever learn?

  • Great for Hogan Lovells, terrible for SJ Berwin's deals practice. Harris has been one of the biggest players in their team from a high profile deal perspective. Risky move for him, but great if he can transfer his client base.

  • Nice guy, and incredibly bright. Wish him well with this move.

  • There seems to be new revelations about SJB every month. I don't think bad publicity is always "publicity" in the legal field.

Congrats to Harris - one of the lucky ones.

  • Lucy Burton, where is the photo? He is a hottie.

  • With EH leaving, who is left at SJB with a credible practice (apart from head Steven Davis)? Davis will have to keep that team afloat in terms of deal quality, client strength and profile. It's been said before, but sinking ship ... no?

  • Don't think it's right to attribute Ed's departure to a deal he happened to work with Stuart Brinkworth on. I imagine Ed, like everybody else who has left SJB, had had his fill of the appalling and stifling culture that exists among the partnership at SJB and Lovells had an opportunity. Wish him the best of luck with the move.

  • Great hire for Lovells. This will do wonders for their private equity practice. For SJB, yet another departure that no doubt could have been prevented with proper management. They will have nobody decent left.

  • Congrats to him. I'm sure he'll flourish outside SJB. Used to work there and he has some great clients and great work. He never really fit in with that team I have to say - in my opinion at least. Thoroughly nice chap. There is a great associate in that team that he works a lot with and who is definitely a calming influence on his projects (I found Ed to be exceptional, but tough and demanding). She will probably follow, which in itself is a blow for that team. Can SJB afford any more losses?

  • When I worked at SJB years ago, Ed was a partner but treated like a senior associate - did most of his work, never got the credit. How the tables have turned. Good for him.

  • Do Hogan Lovells take umbrage at being called "Lovells" only?

  • That's Leanne Moezi gone too then I suspect. Real shame.

  • Quelle surprise.

  • No disrespect to Hogan Lovells, but their private equity practice is not a patch on SJB's. Says an awful lot about how wretched the culture must be at SJB if Harris taking a leap of faith and not upgrading. Wish him well.

  • Is this linked to the upcoming merger? Any more departures expected?

Unsuitable or offensive? Report this comment

  • Wow. Ed and Leanne are a breath of fresh air on a soulless floor. Good on him, and I hope Leanne stays, but SJB's loss is Hogan Lovell's gain, sadly.

  • Can't say I'm surprised at this.

  • Sinking ship anyone? SJB corporate surely in state of crisis now.

  • SJB has been like a departure lounge in recent months. This latest one is a definite blow to the development of that department.

  • Ed made a huge contribution to keeping morale high. Genuinely nice guy, exceptionally talented and technical. Demanding as hell to work with, and I wasn't even in corporate!! Good luck.

  • Fair to say Moezi's out the door too?

  • Am I missing something? Ed Harris is no saint. He is incredibly rude to work with. Great lawyer, but very rude and abrupt.

  • Oh I do love a good berwins story on here ...

  • Although the flood of anonymous comments is suspicious, it sure is easy to join in the schadenfreude in respect of SJB.

I'm certain that this is merely the first of many pending announcements of SJB departures as the "merger" (joining a Swiss verein isn't really a merger, is it?) goes effective in a week or so.

  • Surely there's an opportunity for a new lateral to come in to SJB and grab that department by the scruff of its neck? From what I'm observing, they need to do something quickly.

Unsuitable or offensive? Report this comment

  • Why does SJB get such a bad rep? It is a great firm and will continue to be a great firm despite departures and setbacks.

  • Why so much hate for berwins?

  • Chaos. Who's next? They will no doubt be fine, but they should try and curb exits now. Would love to see a list of partner departures in the last 3 years from berwins.

  • Ed Harris is fantastic.

I loved him in 'The Rock' in particular.

  • Does Harris rank after Davis re deal flow for the PE deals practice at SJB? Who else is in the team - and who of those will be staying I wonder?

  • Associates must be dusting off their CVs ...

  • Look, this is par for the course and happens at every ... single ... other ... law firm. This is not unique to SJB. Sometimes you fit at a firm, sometimes you don't. If you don't, you move on, and everybody continues as is.

Have looked up LM. Firstly, hello. Secondly, not sure why everybody assumes she's also off - doesn't appear to me that she works exclusively for him.

This article really does have everybody incredibly excited and jumping to assumptions - Brinkworth made the deal; it's because of the merger. Big deal? A partner exit is nothing new.

  • Worked with Ed Harris at SJB and whilst demanding was incredibly nice and a pleasure to work for.

  • Anon @ 3:04pm - yeah, it's Davis and Harris who have the most high profile work in that team. Like others, not sure where this leaves them ...

  • Agree with all sentiments. Ed is a highly personable individual with a fantastic client base and the corporate team at SJB will be poorer without him in all respects. Wish him well, super talented and sure he has a great future ahead of him.

  • OMG.......Ed Harris is a total "dream boat" no more "diet coke break" for the girls at SJB.

  • Hello! I am a lawyer in the regions! Who knew there was so much interest in one partner practising in physical education law!

Best of luck to him in his new firm!

  • Sad but inevitable. Hugely disappointing for Berwins. Hugely exciting for Ed Harris. In terms of speculation as to whether he'll take a team, I'm ex Berwins and always thought he was a little lost without the stability of particular associates around him. Shame the same can't be said of his partners, who I imagine he will not be in the slightest bit lost without.

  • When a firm is losing people at this rate from its marquee practice area then you know that the rot is very far advanced.
