Former Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer senior partner Konstantin Mettenheimer is set to join asset manager Edmond de Rothschild Group this summer as its Germany chairman.
The Frankfurt tax partner will be chairman for the Franco-Swiss bank’s businesses in Germany, including its asset management, private banking and advisory services.
Based in Frankfurt, Mettenheimer will join Rothschild this summer following a handover period. He will replace Rupert Hengster, who headed the group’s German base since the launch of the asset management arm in the country in 2010. Hengster is leaving the company.
Mettenheimer was Freshfields’ joint senior partner from 2004 to 2010, when he was replaced by corporate specialist Will Lawes (30 September 2010). He shared the role with Anthony Salz for the first two years and Guy Morton after 2006.
Rothschild confirmed the appointment after it was first reported by German legal magazine JuVe, adding in a statement: “Konstantin Mettenheimer’s appointment underlines the group’s determination to extend its position in the German market and to expand its core strategic businesses of asset management and private banking. After a handover period, Rupert Hengster, who helped Edmond de Rothschild Asset Management break into the German market from 2010, will be leaving the group.
“The decision to reinforce Germany and to develop an activity dedicated to private clients and privately held businesses is part of the 2013-2016 strategic plan unveiled by group CEO Christophe de Backer in December 2012.”
De Backer said in a statement: “The Edmond de Rothschild group has major ambitions in Europe and beyond, and particularly in Germany. We’re already active in asset management there and now wish to extend our activities dedicated to private clients. Konstantin Mettenheimer’s remarkable track record and experience will be particularly valuable for the group in the German market.”
Lawes added: “Konstantin Mettenheimer has been an exceptional Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer partner. He has contributed greatly to the excellent shape that our firm is in today, both nationally in Germany and Austria as well as internationally. We’re hugely grateful for all he has done for our firm and we wish him all the best in his exciting new role at Edmond de Rothschild.”
Other high-profile senior partners to have joined financial institutions include former Freshfields corporate partner Salz, who became executive vice-chairman of Rothschild in 2006 (23 June 2006), and Clifford Chance ex-chief Stuart Popham, who moved to Citigroup as vice-chairman of EMEA banking in 2011 (29 March 2011).
