Managing the legal affairs for a consultancy group that operates in more than 50 countries worldwide is a challenge in itself.
But 2012 saw a whole new dimension to Darryl Coulter’s (scroll down for video interview) role as group legal manager at Celerant Consulting.
Having been heavily involved in all of the legal aspects related to Celerant’s office launches in Abu Dhabi in 2009 and Brazil in 2011, Coulter suddenly found himself acting as the linchpin of the company’s bid to open an office in Oman last year.
Hopping on a plane to Muscat, Coulter was instrumental in brokering a deal that fulfilled the country’s strict shareholding requirements.
Two weeks and 33 meetings later, Celerant became the first foreign consulting company to navigate the country’s tough red tape successfully.
Coulter has had ambitious plans ever since he joined the company in 2000, vowing he would have a legal panel up and running within a year, and duly appointing four firms to the new roster. Twelve years on, in Celerant’s 25th anniversary year, Coulter’s ambitious streak has not wavered and he still has many ideas up his sleeve.
He recently took the initiative to secure ISO270001 certification for Celerant’s information security management system and the company successfully passed the first audit in 2012.
Coulter is in no doubt as to what the certification means for the business. “With around 80 per cent of our staff in the field at any given time, having the badge saying ISO270001 certification really gives us a leg up when compared with our competitors.”
