Trowers & Hamlins has hired RadcliffesLeBrasseur tax and private client chief Simon Goldring as head of private wealth. Goldring had been a partner at Radcliffes-LeBrasseur since joining the firm 2008, prior to which he was a sole practitioner. In 2009 he became head of tax and private client.
Bingham McCutchen has hired funds partner Thiha Tun from Herbert Smith Freehills. Tun is to join the partnership in September and will work closely with Bingham partner John Holton, who relocated his international funds practice to London from Boston in 2011.
Simeon Spencer, the founding partner of Spencer Lufia, has joined forces with former Goodman Derrick head of employment Helen Wyatt to form new firm Spencer Wyatt. Spencer left Morgan Lewis & Bockius to launch Spencer Lufia in December 2010. Spencer Wyatt commences operations at new premises in Clerkenwell.
Shepherd and Wedderburn has hired two real estate partners to its London office with Sally Morris-Smith joining from Kennedys and Jonathan Rickard from Addleshaw Goddard. Morris-Smith worked at Olswang before joining Kennedys in 2009, while Rickard previously headed Addleshaws’ London real estate group.
Pannone has appointed former Cobbetts lawyer Richard Hepworth as a partner in its corporate group. Hepworth was formerly based in Cobbetts’ Leeds office where he specialised in all aspects of corporate work including M&A.
Paul Edwards has joined the Manchester office of Darbys Solicitors as a solicitor in the firm’s employment team. He was previously an associate at Chester law firm DTM Legal.
Keoghs has bolstered its fraud offering by appointing two senior fraud experts. Raphael Lawson joins the Bolton-based firm as director of lifestyle insurance fraud from Kennedys, while Damian Ward joins as a partner from Clyde & Co, where he was head of fraud.
Stewarts Law has named Mo Bhaskaran as a partner and head of commercial litigation in its Leeds office. He joins the litigation firm from Pinsent Masons, where he developed a specialism in fraud and corruption investigations as well complex commercial disputes.
Southampton firm Eric Robinson Solicitors has promoted equity-partner Catherine Maxfield to the role of managing partner. She is the firm’s first female managing partner and joined in 1998.
Simmons & Simmons has added a fourth partner to its low-cost Bristol base with the hire of Burges Salmon funds specialist Marie Webb. The asset management, fund formation and financial services regulation partner will join Simmons’ nascent base in the city on a date as yet unconfirmed.
Scottish firm Maclay Murray & Spenshas expanded its partnership with two promotions. Renewable energy practice head David Cruickshank has been promoted to the capital projects partnership, while life sciences lawyer Ross Nicol is promoted in the IP and technology group.
Osborne Clarke hired a two-partner team from former Belgian ally De Wolf & Partners for its nascent Belgian office. Employment partner Thierry Viérin and commercial partner Stefan Deswert will join the firm in Brussels.
DAC Beachcroft has bolstered its Madrid partnership with the hire of Ruth Duque, who formerly oversaw legislation policy at regulator the Directorate General of Insurance and Pension Funds.
French firm Darrois Villey Maillot Brochier has picked up a three-strong tax team from Jones Day in Paris, including the US firm’s European tax head Vincent Agulhon. Darrois routinely advises on France’s biggest transactions. Last year the firm picked up a lead role for EADS on its proposed merger with BAE Systems, which later fell through.
US-based insurance giant Lockton has announced the hire of Towergate legal chief Sam Clark as general counsel. Clark, who has worked for insurance broker Towergate since 2003, replaces former GC Charlotte Taggart after she left to become a corporate insurance partner with RPC in January.
Allen & Overy has extended its litigation practice to Perth with the hire of partner Mark van Brakel from Australian firm Corrs Chambers Westgarth. Van Brakel joins Allen & Overy from Corrs’ Perth office, where he has been a partner for three years. Prior to joining Corrs he spent 13 years with Clayton Utz.
Milbank Tweed, Hadley & McCloy has appointed Allen & Overy (A&O) partner Aled Davies to its Tokyo office. Davies, who has led large financing teams on projects stretching from the Middle East and Asia to South America, previously headed A&O’s Asia Pacific projects group.
Reed Smith has hired James Mercadante as a corporate partner in the firm’s New York office. He focuses on capital raising and transactional activities of PE funds, hedge funds and private companies and joins from Orrick Herrington & Sutcliffe, where he was a partner.
Barristers Zannis Mavrogordato and Mahnaz Malik have left 12 Gray’s Inn Square to take up tenancy with 20 Essex Street. International arbitration specialist Mavrogordato is dual-qualified as an English barrister, having been called to the bar in 1999 and becoming a French avocat in 2007. Malik, who was called in 2005, specialises in international law and international dispute settlement.
Quadrant Chambers has appointed Simon Slattery as joint senior clerk alongside senior clerk Gary Ventura. Slattery will join the set from Atkin Chambers.
