  • Re anon 6.14. I think the uk firms are less likely to take draconian action to retain profitability. US firms are generally managed by heavily chargeable lawyers for whom, frankly, the easy answer to retaining profits is to cut staff and sweat the assets even harder. I think uk based firms are more likely to think about efficiencies which will in some cases (ashursts for example) will likely result in redundancies but which shows more intelligent thinking to the current market challenges.

  • If you really think big UK and US law firms are not doing this kind of thing unannounced all over the place (in some cases more gradually but not always) then you have not been paying attention for the past five years.....

  • In this market every law firm worth its salt should take an axe to its cost base. Basic business sense. Don't like it? Move. If you can move, you're unlikely to be the one getting the axe. If you can't move, and you don't like it, do some work and make yourself indispensible you lazy git.
