A majority of the DLA Piper staff asked to relocate to Edinburgh from the firm’s defunct Glasgow office have turned down the offer, with just eight out of 30 staff deciding to make the move.
Of 10 partners and 30 staff offered the opportunity to transfer from DLA Piper in Glasgow to Edinburgh, four partners and eight staff have chosen to stay after a three-month trial period. The rest have taken voluntary redundancy or left the firm, with one lawyer moving to DLA Piper in the Middle East.
In January DLA Piper announced that its Glasgow office would shut by the end of the 2012/13 financial year, following a redundancy consultation affecting 251 staff which kicked off in November (13 November 2012). The trial period ended on 1 July.
Commenting on the end of the Edinburgh trial relocation, a spokesperson for DLA Piper said: “Four partners and eight employees have become permanent in the Edinburgh office after the trial. One senior associate transferred to Dubai.” The firm declined to comment further.
The latest partner departure from the Edinburgh office was announced yesterday, when former Glasgow DLA Piper partner Neil Burges joined Brodies’ corporate team (29 July 2013).
DLA Piper’s Scotland restructuring head Yvonne Brady moved to HBJ Gateley, the Scottish arm of Gateley, in March (18 March 2013). Meanwhile, DWF took a three-person corporate team from DLA Piper that had originally been based in the firm’s Glasgow office (19 June 2013)
The firm has also seen a number of departures in Manchester, with Irwin Mitchell picking up DLA Piper five partners this year (29 July 2013).
