  • What did Geffen do to deserve this?

  • Shocked - Geffen is a true star. What was Ashurst thinking?

  • The dangers of democracy - oust the guy who actually sorted out the merger and who knows how the whole combination works. Way to go, Ashurst partners!

  • The man's a legend. A tough act to follow.

  • Is this really a big shock? Tidswell is very impressive and obviously convinced those around him that he was the best man for the next installment of the role

  • Beware the defeated incumbent. The question must be whether CG feels that he has accomplished all he can at Ashurst. There'd be a fair few competitors, UK or American-based, who would give their eye teeth for a man with Geffen's private equity expertise and contacts book.

It wouldn't be the first time in living memory that an important senior figure at Ashurst had left with a nose slightly out of joint, either. The example of Justin Spendlove is still reasonably fresh in the mind, I should imagine, and you'd think that Ashurst would want to be extremely careful to ensure that a man of Geffen's qualities is happy to remain within the tent.

  • And why is the internal politics of a law firm of any consequence whatsoever?

Good grief, get a grip on reality!

  • The result means that there is disaffection with Geffen's leadership and belief that Tidswell is the right candidate for the job.

Unless you work at Ashurst, anyone external to the firm will only know of Geffen as a brilliant PE lawyer. As we all know, being a good lawyer does not necessarily translate into good governance and management.
