  • Despite the snooty comments (which I would infer come from young pups in silver or magic circle firms) I think BD are a Firm who are going places. They have a solid reputation in a number of promising sectors (including energy) and I have always found them to be reasonable and constructive when sitting at the opposite side of the table. They strike a good balance between protection of their clients' interests and getting things done.

In contrast, dealing with anyone below Partner (possibly senior associate in some cases) in a silver or magic circle Firm is a task from which even Sisyphus would shrink. You either get an over-aggressive table-thumper or an instruction-manual pedant neither of whom seems to be capable of reasoned debate or decision-making. They do their client any favours and their intransigence unnecessarily increases costs for both sides. Of course, they may not consider that to be a bad thing.

  • "No commentator who understands the market would dismiss this merger as "insignificant" . "

The merger may not be insignificant to the relevant market but the market they operate in is insignificant.

  • As a former client of the Newcastle branch of this new firm I can see why these news stories tend to generate negative comments. I get the impression that the previous redundancies were not handled well. Surely more redundancies to come following the merger.

  • I was exceptionally badly treated when I worked at Dickinson Dees (and, despite details vindicating me having since become public, I have yet to receive an apology). However I am giving Bond Dickinson a clean slate. Others should do the same.

  • The best thing to happen to Dickinson Dees in the last 10 years was coming last in the Roll on Friday law firm survey. It hurt but problems were confronted. The firm turned a corner.

The second best thing is merging with Bond Pearce, a well liked and run firm.

For these reasons I think Bond Dickinson is heading in the right direction. Well done on the promotions.
