WINNER: Gianni Origoni Grippo Cappelli & Partners

For the second year running, Gianni Origoni Grippo Cappelli & Partners becomes Italian Law Firm of the Year. Although the category had several strong entries, judges felt Gianni had managed to build on last year’s success.

The firm garners particular plaudits from in-house counsel, who praise its willingness to discuss alternative fee arrangements, its international mindset and a “demonstrable commitment to succession and proper governance”.

“It is probably the best European firm in cross-border work of all kinds, not just M&A,” said one judge.

A duo of lateral hires and four internal promotions brought partner numbers to 80 and helped Gianni launch a private client team led by new arrival Claudio Grego.

Gianni is one of the most internationally-focused Italian firms and it continued to grow this side of its business last year. It plans to launch in Hong Kong and added a Turkey desk to its China, India and Korea desks, while continuing to look at new markets.

Back at home, Gianni was instructed on a wealth of transactions including the first acquisition under Italy’s new ‘golden share’ legislation, advising General Electric on its acquisition of Avio’s aviation business.
