WINNER: Vieira de Almeida & Associados

Vieira de Almeida & Associados (VdA) becomes the second Portuguese firm to scoop the Iberian Law Firm of the Year title, with judges praising its foresighted strategy and consistent revenue and profit growth in the past few years.

The firm restructured its partnership in 2012, bringing all partners into the equity, adding a gate in the lockstep and introducing an annual evaluation process. A partnership committee is now assessing performance. Over the coming months VdA is canvassing lawyers, staff and clients to develop its next three-year plan, which will include further international growth, notably in Africa.

Following the recent hire of Linklaters partner Jorge Bleck, further laterals are also expected.

VdA is also putting a lot of effort into developing future talent. In 2012 its new VdA Academy was certified by the Portuguese Directorate-General for Employment and Labour Relations and now provides training for lawyers and clients. The firm also set up a ‘Spring School’ for law students to set them up for life in a law firm. The small amount charged per student was funnelled into an entrepreneurship programme for underprivileged young people and demonstrates VdA’s commitment to the firm's future.

Highly commended
