WINNER: Davitt Jones Bould
Planning specialist Davitt Jones Bould has picked up some of the biggest contracts of the past few years in its sector. Its work on London 2012 on behalf of The Royal Parks saw it advise on 40 Olympic and Paralympic events, including the siting of the volleyball on Horse Guards Parade, the triathlon in Hyde Park and the equestrian events in Greenwich Park. Its work on the Bomber Command Memorial for The Royal Parks saw lawyers negotiate a high-profile proposal to construct a memorial on the corner of Green Park and Piccadilly, close to Buckingham Palace. The project was complex due to the time pressures in line with London 2012 requirements and political pressures on the construction of the memorial. It was unveiled by the Queen in June 2012 and is now an established tourist destination. Cross-jurisdictional work includes the disposal of the Lithuanian Embassy in Mayfair, while an example of national work is the Taunton Northern Inner Distributor Road, one of four major highways projects on which the firm is advising. The £21m project has an estimated development potential of £300m, including the creation of 3,600 jobs and 900 new homes. The firm acts for more than 60 government bodies as well as a range of local authorities and private clients.

2ND: Jordans Solicitors
Jordans Solicitors' team of 15, including six paralegals and three support staff, works tirelessly on child abuse cases. The firm has, along with psychologists and barristers, achieved successful outcomes for hundreds of clients, despite clients being distressed, resources scarce and the work mainly publicly funded. This type of work is incredibly challenging in nature; clients are often from very disadvantaged backgrounds and can become demanding, and even dependent, upon professionals. Psychological and psychiatric conditions mean that clients often struggle to understand the litigation process. Clients frequently have drug or alcohol addictions or are in prison. Victims of abuse can contact the Jordans team for free advice. Contact with the team is often the first time a client has spoken of the abuse they have suffered. Jordans is currently campaigning for an inquiry into church child abuse in England and Wales and continues to help hundreds of claimants on a pro bono basis every year.
3RD: Zyda Law
In 2012, Zyda Law continued its work in nuclear planning and environmental law. Its expertise led to it advising EDF Energy in its response to the Fukushima nuclear disaster in Japan. Work included preparing a planning application for an Emergency Response Centre to provide an operational safety line in the event of a natural disaster and a review of EU nuclear ‘stress tests’. It also included a public consultation and advising EDF on the Office for Nuclear Regulation's report into the Fukushima disaster. Zyda's expertise has informed EDF's work on the decommissioning of the Dounreay nuclear power plant, the most extensive nuclear development proposals ever in the UK. The boutique advised on the application for planning permission for the retrieval of nuclear waste and remediation of former nuclear disposal facilities, for development of a nuclear waste store and for the demolition of nuclear buildings. Zyda's turnover doubled during 2012.
