Global legal titan DLA Piper wins this category for its Next Generation Desktop program, a system that provides a fast, functional and reliable workspace for its users across Emea and the Asia Pacific. A key deliverable of the program was the ability for users to access their desktop at any time, in any place, on any device – which the firm termed the ‘Martini desktop’. Project manager Alice Blake led the scheme to provide a cloud desktop for every user who wanted one, in DLA Piper’s case more than 3,500 individuals. The project transformed ‘Bring Your Own Device’ from something that was previously prohibited to being fully supported and actively promoted by the IT team. It represented a generational shift for DLA Piper IT, allowing it to embrace consumer devices as a supported working model. Among the many gains is that user satisfaction has increased significantly as DLA Piper IT is no longer seen as a one-size-fits-all service provider. Instead, it is seen as an enabler, providing solutions that support the blended work/life balance of the latest generation of lawyers, while ensuring security and confidentiality of client data. “Cloud desktop projects are probably the acid test benchmark for a law firm’s IT capability today,” noted one of the judges. “The results from DLA’s project strongly suggest that they met and exceeded the standard required, from the way in which the project was managed/measured to timescales. And all across an incredibly large population and with a constant focus on real business benefits.”

Runner up Eversheds ranked highly based on the launch of the big data-utilising reputation management tool Eversheds Big View. The brainchild of chief information officer Paul Caris, it uses a complex algorithm to monitor the sentiments that matter most to clients in real time, wherever in the world they occur. It allows the client to take instant remedial action and highlights the appropriate legal solutions. Eversheds has invested in the first two Samsung SUR ‘tables’ – a table-sized tablet that enables at-a-glance visualisation of big data. The server analyses all social media information related to a particular client and uses sentiment analysis to grade the comments as positive, negative or neutral, indicating this on a visual map of the world using emoticons. The product aims to build better relationships with clients by providing insights into their business that they do not yet have and which they may not have the appetite or resource to invest time or money in. “A great example of the valuable and strategic application of IT capability and IT resources to client services,” said a judge.
3RD: Taylor Wessing
Taylor Wessing takes third place after utilising its own in-house knowledge to launch a cloud-based brand protection service for clients. The project, delivered in partnership with salesforce.com, involved the implementation of a social media search engine which utilises cloud-based technology, sentiment analysis and big data analytics to scrutinise social media conversations about clients and their brands. The software alerts members of Taylor Wessing’s brands and reputation management teams to any social media activity that could negatively affect the reputation of its clients, thus providing the opportunity to approach the relevant clients about reputation management work. The judges were clearly impressed. “Exactly what an award-winning innovative legal technology product should be focused on – delivering a market-leading client service,” they said.
