A lady magistrate has lost her job after mooning at a stable boss during an row. Josie Lewis, 45, was sacked from her post in Swindon, Wilts, by Lord Irvine who said the JP had "failed to uphold the dignity , standing and good reputation of the magistracy. The Lord Chancellor and Home Secretary, Jack Straw now plan to review the 700-year-old system which deals with 97 percent of criminal cases in the UK.
The Supreme Court of Canada has for the first time appointed a woman to be its most senior judge. Beverley McLachlin, who was assigned to the High Court in 1989, will become Chief Justice of Supreme Court at the beginning of January. She replaces Antonio Lamer who is retiring.
The Hong Kong office of Allen & Overy has expanded its litigation and dispute resolution group with the deployment of partner, Andrew Jeffries from the London office. He boosts partner count in that department up to four.
Lewis Silkin has become the latest in a long line of law firms to drop its capitals. The London commercial firm has added a touch of orange to its letterhead and will henceforth be known as lewissilkin. Managing partner, Trevor Watkins says: "Everyone at Lewis Silkin [sic] is very excited about the new look and forthcoming brochure and website, we hope our clients will like them too."
