News Corp on cusp of GC appointment following phone-hacking scandal

New Corporation is close to appointing a senior Washington DC litigator as its new general counsel, some six months after the previous legal head stood down.

Williams & Connolly partner Gerson Zweifach is in advanced talks with the media giant, according to The Wall Street Journal.

General counsel Lawrence Jacobs resigned from the role to “pursue new opportunities” in June, during the height of the News of the World phone hacking scandal (16 June 2011).

The company appointed former deputy general counsel Janet Nova as interim legal chief in July (22 July 2011). Nova is expected to stay on at News Corporation, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Jacobs had spent seven years in the general counsel role. The company said in the summer that is was considering both internal and external appointments for the position.
