Trowers & Hamlins has appointed a new managing partner for its Abu Dhabi office following the January retirement of longstanding office head Andrew Rae.
Guy Danalis became resident managing partner following Rae’s departure. He has been working in Trowers’ Abu Dhabi office for several years and was promoted to the partnership in 2009 (25 March 2009).
Danalis is a corporate and commercial specialist, and prior to joining Trowers worked in-house at Japanese tourism company Daiyko.
Trowers has two other partners in its Abu Dhabi base, corporate and IT lawyer Saleem Adam and projects specialist Edmund Sia. UAE managing partner Abdullah Mutawi (6 September 2011) splits his time between Abu Dhabi and Dubai.
The firm has had a difficult time in the Middle East over the past two years. In early 2011 (23 May 2011) Trowers announced it was closing its Jeddah office after just one year, and eight months later confirmed it was pulling out of Riyadh after its last associate in the city moved to the firm’s local ally (23 February 2012). Meanwhile, Clyde & Co hired Trowers’ Saudi practice head Adrian Creed (11 January 2012).
In the summer, Addleshaw Goddard launched in Dubai with the hire of Trowers partner Andrew Greaves (11 July 2012), and Trowers partners Charles Schofield and Roger Byrne sparked a row as they left the firm’s Oman office, also for Addleshaws, in January (15 January 2013).

Rae is a huge loss for Trowers. Do the senior equity partners actually care about the Middle East any more? That's a rhetorical question, btw...

Well done TH. With Mr Rae's departure that makes 5 partners (Bahrain - Head of Regional Banking, Abu Dhabi - Mr R, 1 in Dubai and 2 in Oman) and one office (Saudi - where has that office gone?) all in the space of 12 months - perhaps not a vintage year!

Incorrect Anonymous, you do them a disservice. It's been seven partners, as well as one office: two partners in Abu Dhabi and two in Dubai.

Why is it that Trowers, more than anyone else, seem to excel at falling out with their exiting partners in the Middle East - and there have been a lot more than the numbers highlighted above would suggest!? Perhaps a comment from the head of International HR would help - what say you Mr Lewis?
Ps. Congratulations to Guy Danalis - a good bloke in an increasingly irrelevant firm

Finally the firm has seen light. I think this firm will now move forward. About time.
