Rajah & Tann has expanded its coverage in Malaysia with associate firm Kamilah & Chong completing a three-way merger to create enlarged firm Christopher & Lee Ong.
Rajah & Tann has been in an association relationship with Kuala Lumpur-based Kamilah & Chong since 2007. Recently, the local firm has merged with two other local outlets Lee Ong & Kandiah and Christopher Lee & Co. The three-way merger has created a new firm under the name Christopher & Lee Ong, which has entered into a strategic alliance with Singapore-based Rajah & Tann.
The enlarge Malaysian firm now has 44 fee-earners, of whom 17 are partners, and is led by joint managing partners Christopher Lee and Lee Hock Chye.
Rajah & Tann is Asia Pacific’s 35th largest independent firm by lawyer numbers, according to The Lawyer Asia Pacific 150. Based in Singapore, the firm has developed an extensive footprint across the region in recent years.
In September 2011, the firm launched in Vietnam and Thailand with offices in Ho Chi Minh City and Bangkok (14 September 2011). In early 2013, it further expanded into Cambodia and Myanmar by taking on two small local firms, Phnom Penh-based Sok & Heng and Yangon-based NK Legal (1 February 2013). Most recently, the firm gained access to the largest economy in Southeast Asia by forming a strategic alliance with Jakarta-based Assegaf Hamzah & Partners.
