Hot 100: Daniel Toledano QC, One Essex Court
“The drama of the court has always attracted me,” says One Essex Court’s Daniel Toledano QC (Scroll down for video interview), who has made the transition from junior to silk look seamless.
Called to the bar in 1993, Toledano took silk in 2009 and has never looked back. Now regularly cited as one of the rising stars of the bar, he has been involved in some of the most high-profile cases of the last decade, including the Office of Fair Trading’s bank charges case, with Toledano instructed for HSBC in the Supreme Court.
Commercially aware, practical and effective, this is a barrister who likes to roll up his sleeves and get stuck into a case. “You have got to love the advocacy to do this job,” he says. “The other thing is that it is a hugely people-based job.”
Litigators say he is an advocate who loves to be part of a team and is easy to work with.
It is in the energy markets that Toledano really excels, although he says 2012 was a mixed year. “2012 was a really varied year in terms of the type of work. There was energy, banking, finance - a lot of fraud related work. It’s big stuff and there are lots of issues.”
That said, his biggest task in 2013 is practising his scales. A late learner of the piano, he admits he is currently being outperformed by his five-year-old son.
