Pinsent Masons has made up 14 partners in its second promotions round since it took over Scottish firm McGrigors on 1 May last year.
The number is one up on last year, when the newly merged firm made up 13 new partners (16 May 2012), two of whom came from the McGrigors side of the business. The previous year the two firms made up 11 partners between them, with Pinsents promoting five and McGrigors six (7 October 2011).
However, the number represents a significant drop from the years following the 2005 tie-up between Pinsents and Masons. Immediately following that deal, the firm promoted 18 (16 May 2005) while in 2006 it made up 12 and in 2007 a record 20 got the nod (2 April 2007).
This year’s promotions are spread across the firm’s UK and Greater China offices, with London taking three, Manchester, Leeds and Glasgow two each, and Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong one each.
In terms of practice areas, real estate and energy are the biggest winners with four new partners each while financial services has received two. Corporate, infrastructure, sport and TMT have received one new partner each.
In a statement managing partner David Ryan said: “Pinsent Masons has made significant progress over the year and we’re pleased to be able to promote a number of talented individuals to help us build upon that.
“We remain committed to ensuring our business is well-placed to respond to demand in those sectors and markets where we see significant potential for growth.”
Pinsents’ take-over of McGrigors went live on 1 May 2012 (6 February 2012). The firm has held a number of redundancy rounds since then, cutting 47 support roles in August (24 August 2012) and 15 finance and knowledge management jobs in December (7 December 2012). The firm is currently in consultation over plans to cut 13 lawyers from its employment practice (11 April 2013).
