Is it a bird? Is it a plane? Or is it Berwin Leighton Paisner trying to sniff out a global merger?
Head of corporate John Bennett has been sent on his travels under the title of international business partner, which is essentially a job about developing cross-border work and client relationships, especially in the US and China. Few at BLP are in a better position to do this than Bennett, who has been head of corporate since 2001 and relationship partner for clients such as Tesco, Legal & General and Balfour Beatty.
Away from the cosy surrounds of Adelaide House, Bennett is juggling a number of tasks. After overseeing the corporate practice during a tough time given market conditions, he will now work to win over inbound investors into the UK, shore up a few referral relationships and maybe, just maybe, find someone to merge with.
Will it be a Chinese firm? An Australian firm? A US firm? Or none at all? The world is on tenterhooks.
