New lawyers hit by upturn in PC fee

New solicitors will now be expected to stump up an additional £40 for their practising certificates after the Law Society readjusted their budget for the current financial year.

The practice certificate fee will rise by 5 per cent to £830, because of new items which the Law Society Council says: “..which were not known at the time the budget was approved by Council in July 2003.”

These include part-year costs of increased employers’ pension fund contributions. The full-year cost of all the related items will be shown in the 2005 budget and hit PC fees for 2005-06.

However the low-income threshold, qualifying solicitors for a reduced fee, has been increased from £13,500 to £20,000
