What is the biggest misconception about the legal profession? That all lawyers are the same. There are many types of lawyer, from the high street solicitor to the partner in a magic circle firm, and their work is completely different.

Why did you want to study law at university? I found A-level law fascinating so it seemed an obvious choice. I thought the degree would be useful in any profession, although I chose it with the intention of pursuing a legal career.
What is the most difficult aspect of studying law? Law is a demanding subject, and to begin with I found it difficult that my flatmates studying other subjects only had a few hours of lectures compared to me.
What is the best part of studying law? It is really rewarding when you finally understand the intricacies of a complex case.
What do you know now about pursuing a career in law that you wish you knew when you were doing your A-levels? Law is competitive - you have to be determined to succeed.
What are your career goals? To become a successful commercial solicitor in an international firm so I can continue using my language skills.
What work experience have you gained in recent years and what have you learnt from it? Working in the in-house legal team for a defence contractor showed me the difference between working in-house and at a law firm. Work experience at Berwin Leighton Paisner gave me an insight into life at a City firm, and the type of work a trainee solicitor handles.
What tips would you give to someone who is planning to pursue a career in law? Be prepared to work hard and accept that it is not going be easy. Get into extracurricular activities, as law firms like to see that you are a rounded person. Get the best possible grades because good academics are vital. Most of all, law must be something you feel passionately about. The process of qualification is long, so be sure a legal career is for you.
