NABARRO Nathanson has boosted its public sector profile by successfully securing the appointment as sole legal adviser to the South East Regional Development Agency (RDA).
It is understood that Eversheds, which had previously acted for many RDAs including the South East, put in a tender for the appointment, but lost out to Nabarros.
Eversheds' commercial property partner Stephen Sorrell questioned Nabarros' sole appointment.
"I would be surprised if a single firm has been appointed as sole advisers to provide the full range of legal services required," he says.
The Nabarros public sector team is headed by partner Malcolm Iley and includes partners, Mary Bzowska, Helen Randall and Mary Bonar, who has recently joined from Wilde Sapte.
Iley says: "RDAs are at the forefront of breathing life into areas that require attention and resources. They require a wide range of legal advice, ranging from traditional property site acquisitions to the creation of public private partnerships."
Phil Bailey, spokesman for South East RDA, says: "We are very pleased to have chosen Nabarros. There were various firms that submitted a tender for the appointment and Nabarros was chosen as it has considerable experience on the type of work required by the agency."
The Nabarros team will advise on all aspects of the agency's work, including compliance, funding mechanisms, fiscal measures and commercial property work.
The agency was set up in December 1998 and is expected to be operational in April 1999. It is one of the largest in the country, covering the majo-rity of the southern eastern counties.
