Nabarro’s French best friend August & Debouzy has abandoned its European alliance, leaving the firm on the hunt for a new Paris partner.
The firm’s newly-appointed head of international, Patricia Godfrey, is leading the team that is looking for a new French best friend as well as exploring interest from firms in other parts of Europe.
She has been tasked with finding a firm that will work alongside Nabarro’s European law network, which includes German firm GSK Stockmann + Kollegen, Italian firm Nunziante Magrone, and Spanish firm Roca Junyent, which joined in January 2012.
Godfrey, a restructuring and insolvency partner, was named international head in April 2013 and was put in charge of the firm’s expansion overseas following its 2010 launch in Singapore. Earlier this year, the firm opened an office in Dubai, marking its third international opening (21 November 2013).
The addition of Spanish firm Roca Junyent to the alliance gave Nabarro more then 960 lawyers in 23 offices across nine jurisdictions (23 January 2012) and gifted it a presence in Shanghai. The firm had been lacking a Spanish partner since 2009 after Rodes y Sala quit the group and merged with Gomez-Acebo & Pombo (30 June 2009).
Commenting on his firm’s departure, founding partner of August & Debouzy Gilles August said: “This decision allows August & Debouzy an opportunity to develop relationships with other law firms in jurisdictions already covered by Alliance members. Circumstances and priorities change, but I know the positive relationships we have established between member firms across the Alliance will continue even after our departure.”
August & Debouzy added private equity partner David Malamed from Weil Gotshal & Manges in January 2014. He was the first partner-level lateral hire for the firm for two years.
