Nabarro’s head of real estate will fight it out with one of the firm’s corporate stars for the senior partner job following Simon Johnston’s decision to step down early from the role.
Real estate head Ciaran Carvalho and corporate partner Graham Stedman are both running for senior partner following Johnston’s decision to step down at the end of the year (13 September 2012) after 12 years in the role.
The firm plans to elect its new senior partner in time for its partner conference at the beginning of November, with the successful candidate taking the reins in 2013. The winner of the election will serve alongside managing partner Andrew Inkester, a corporate lawyer, who replaced Nicky Paradise in July 2011 (29 July 2011).
Both Carvalho and Stedman were lateral partner hires for Nabarro. Carvalho joined from Dechert, where he had been head of real estate for six years, in January 2009 (6 January 2009), while Stedman joined the firm from Salans in 2005 (10 January 2005).

Both excellent candidates. After a succession of bad news for Nabarro there is at last good reason to be positive about the future with either Ciaran or Graham at the helm.

First comment obviously written by someone at Nabarro. Interesting that both candidates are relatively recent laterals and that no-one home grown stepped up. Speaks volumes about the lack of confidence now pervading the firm after years of mismanagement by the current leadership team. And of course the fact that there's a corporate partner going head to head with real estate will make it interesting. Nabarro has for years wanted to shake off its real estate dependency, although that's where the clients are and the deep experience lies. So I reckon Steadman has an advantage, not necessarily because he is a better candidate. The firm will want to send a message out that corporate is king. But real estate probably has the edge on numbers and assume votes count equally. Good luck to both of them.
