Royal Dutch Shell’s former legal director Peter Rees QC has moved to Thirty Nine Essex Street as a counsel. Rees was appointed legal director of Shell in 2011 after five years as a litigation and international arbitration partner at Debevoise & Plimpton. Prior to that he was head of global dispute resolution at Norton Rose.
Radiant Law has hired Andy Sutherland as head of outsourcing. He was a legal director at RPC.
Parabis has made three hires from Mills & Reeve. Victoria Jordan, Paul Cha and Philip Lawrence join the property risks and coverage team as partners. Jordan was a consultant, Cha a solicitor and Lawrence an associate at Mills & Reeve.
Sir Michael Pitt has been appointed chair of the Legal Services Board. Pitt was previously chair and chief executive of the Planning Inspectorate.
Berrymans Lace Mawer has hired healthcare partner Lisa Nabou (previously De’Ath). She joins from Hong Kong firm Howse Williams Bowers.
Kennedys has hired a professional indemnity partner and a consultant. Both will work in the Taunton office. Andrew Crocombe joins as a partner from Henmans Freeth, while Angela Horne joins as a consultant from Hill Dickinson.
Bristol firm Temple Bright has hired Phil Winterborne from Clarke Willmott, where he was a partner. Winterborne will head a new insolvency and turnaround practice.
Clarke Willmott has hired Vicky Kells as a social housing finance partner. She joins from Eversheds in Cardiff, where she was a real estate principal associate. The firm has also taken on partner Andrew Cooper, who joins from Keystone Law, where he was a consultant solicitor, and solicitor Joanna Burton from Hampshire County Council, where she was a solicitor.
Nelsons has hired Lisa Botterill. She joins as a corporate partner and will head the corporate services team in Leicester. She was formerly a partner at Shakespeares, where she was responsible for setting up the Leicester office before working in the financial services sector.
Capsticks has recruited former DAC Beachcroft health employment head Rachael Heenan. Heenan will be based in the Leeds office and work alongside a number of her former colleagues at DAC who joined Capsticks earlier this month, including partners Robert McGough, Ian Cooper, Ron Simms and Claire Reynolds.
Darbys Solicitors has hired Peter Townsend as tax and pensions head. He is a former lecturer in revenue law at Manchester University.
Shoosmiths has taken on competition partner Amanda Howlett. Previously, she was head of competition at Pannone.
DLA Piper has appointed Lillian Mackenzie as a partner in the projects team in Edinburgh. Prior to joining DLA Piper she was a partner at MacRoberts, which she joined as a trainee in 1999. She became a partner in July 2011.
Gillespie Macandrew has hired former Biggart Baillie chairman and senior partner Murray Shaw as a planning and construction partner. Shaw spent more than
30 years with Biggart Baillie, including more than 20 as a partner, and was chair and senior partner at the time of its merger with DWF in 2012.
At Foot Anstey eight lawyers have been promoted to associate – Sarah Austin and Nicola Allen (employment), Sarah Harding and Nick Loewendahl (dispute resolution), Stacey Bryant (mental capacity), Laura Millman (clinical negligence), Nicola Purcell (real estate litigation) and Matt Rose (wealth and succession).
K&L Gates has hired former Bird & Bird partner Arturo Meglio as a partner in its Milan corporate practice. Meglio advises public and private companies, private equity funds, and financial institutions on domestic and cross-border M&A and other transactions.
Commercial litigator David Pope has joined Ulmer & Berne as a partner in the Chicago office. Pope joins from Mayer Brown, where he was a partner.
Holland & Knight has hired James Meggesto as partner and deputy leader of the firm’s Indian law practice. Meggesto moves from Akin Gump, where he practiced for seven years as a partner. He joins the Washington DC office. Also joining that office is real estate partner Erica Weiss, from Bingham McCutchen.
Clyde & Co’s New York office has hired Owen Carragher as an insurance litigation partner. He joins from New York firm Lankler Carragher & Horwitz, where he was a founding partner and practised commercial litigation and insurance coverage.
Radiant Law has launched a Cape Town office. A new team comprising Justin Cornish, Karien Holtzkampf, Nadia Cassiem and Denae Engelbrecht will establish the office. Cornish joins from Latham & Watkins, where he was counsel, Holtzkampf comes from running the legal team at technology company Clickatell, Cassiem joins from South African lender Sefa and Engelbrecht has been hired from Von Lieres Cooper Barlow & Hangone.

Deirdre Goodwin has joined 7 Bedford Row from 13 King’s Bench Walk, where she led the personal injury and medical law teams.
