Philadelphia-based Morgan Lewis & Bockius has opened an office in Houston, Texas, bagging five lawyers from local litigation boutique Edwards Burns & Krider.
The lawyers include Edwards Burns & Krider name partners Brady Edwards and Sandra Thourot Krider, who have both joined Morgan Lewis as partners.
The lawyers are believed to have moved to Morgan Lewis to be better able to do products liability and toxic tort work, often challenging for smaller firms. Morgan Lewis has 1,353 lawyers, and the new Houston base is its 22nd branch.
Morgan Lewis chairman Francis Milone says the firm hopes to expand several practice areas in Houston, including litigation, energy, labour and intellectual property.
Morgan Lewis first moved into the Texas market in 2004, when it opened an office in Dallas. The firm’s Dallas office currently has 14 lawyers.
Edwards Burns & Krider of counsel Claire Swift Kugler and associate Patrick Elkins have also joined Morgan’s Houston office, while associate Steven Luxton, who had been in Edwards Burns' Baltimore branch, joined Morgan Lewis in Washington DC, as a counsel.
Randolph Burns, the remaining Edwards Burns name partner, has set up as an independent in Port Aransas, also in Texas.
