Morgan Lewis coaxes clerks into pro bono

Morgan Lewis & Bockius is offering its summer clerks money to stay out of the office.

`The firm has asked its 124 summer clerks in six offices to spend the second half of their 10-12 week clerkship doing public interest work.`Their summer salaries will continue throughout the programme, at between $1,700 (£1,227) to $2,400 (£1,732) per week.`This recruitment gambit has prompted a cynical response from some former partners, with many suggesting that this may be a sign that there is not enough work to keep the clerks busy.`But the firm’s managing partner for operations Thomas Sharbaugh disputed this criticism. “We hope to have [the scheme] every year, in the hottest times and the slowest times,” he said.
