Monckton turns to Justice for addition of human rights barrister

Metcalfe joins the set from human rights organisation Justice, where he was director of human rights policy. During his time at Justice he was involved in supporting campaign groups The Corner House and The Campaign Against Arms in their bid for a judicial review of the Serious Fraud Office’s decision to agree a plea bargain settlement with BAE Systems (26 March 2011).

Metcalfe was called to the bar in 1999. Following pupillage at 39 Essex Street, he worked as a lawyer in the immigration and asylum judicial review team of the Treasury Solicitors department before joining Justice in January 2003.

He has appeared in 17 cases before the House of Lords, seven before the UK Supreme Court, and a further seven before the European Court of Human Rights.

In a statement Metcalfe said: “With the EU about to accede to the European Convention on Human Rights, and with the growing importance of the EU Charter in its own right, Monckton’s the ideal place for me to develop my practice in public law, human rights and EU law.”
