The EU and competition practices, which often go hand in hand, are prominent at Monckton Chambers and boast some of the chambers’ heavyweight silks and juniors. Paul Lasok QC enjoys a pre-eminent reputation in the field of European law. He also has vast experience in competition, tax and public law. Former head of chambers John Swift QC is also a silk of high regard in EU and competition law.

Monckton is also recognised for its leading tax practice with a large team of tax specialists. Melanie Hall QC has been long established as a leading VAT specialist while Nicholas Paines QC has a track record of high-profile tax cases with appearances in the Court of Appeal, Supreme Court and European Court of Justice. He is one of the Bar’s few specialists in customs duty as well as VAT litigation.

New silk Kassie Smith QC represented the Office of Fair Trading in Tesco Stores Ltd v Office of Fair Trading [2012] in a case involving price-fixing of cheese and at the appeal heard by the Competition Appeal Tribunal.
