  • Well done, MoFo, on one of the naffest ideas in legal history. Who on earth would want to look at your partners' bios on their iPhone?? Tragically unhip.

  • Isn't "mofo" US street slang for "mother f**ker"...? Certainly not a name a US corporate law firm should be adopting for one of their products!!! Classic marketing disaster!

  • My guess, job applicants.

  • Not the most exciting of offerings, but credit for getting something out there which can be modified/improved as lessons are learnt.

  • I would want to see the bio on an iphone. what seems to be the problem?

  • Oh dear, someone should tell them that 20% of people who download an app never use it. Less than 5% use it in the first three months. And less than 1% use an app after three months. An expensive gimmick.

  • Eck anyone that actually uses the word unhip is tragic.

  • I agree. The only people who will ever use this are MoFo themselves. Gimmick! of all the millions of apps to download this would be bottom of my list, infact I would rather download a virus than this app!

  • I think Arnold & Porter built an iPhone app in Jan - http://blog.larrybodine.com/2010/01/articles/tech/arnold-porter-creates-an-iphone-app-for-law-firm-marketing/

I agree with the first commenter. Tragically unhip + useless sounds about right.

  • Great start! I can learn more about Morrison & Foerster.

We're also debuting our 'web' iPhone app next week at the ABA Techshow.

  • Presumably their marketing team know that MoFo is short for Mother F****r in street slang??
I think a useless iPhone app is the least of their worries.

  • Come on ed you are so last month - UK law firm Bott & Co launched their Iphone App in December....wake up..!!

  • Being "hip" is quite un-hip these days, I find. The app may not be overly useful but credits to MoFo for moving forward in an industry which is generally paralyzed by its conservatism. (One could say, lawyers are by definition un-hip.)

  • I think this is the start to a new revolutionary hand-held workforce. Great job MoFo.

  • I don't know if the iPhone app was designed to be "hip," but it does show that a firm has recognized that lawyers and clients are connecting and communicating in different ways. Whether it's connecting via LinkedIn, receiving legal updates via RSS feeds or video podcasts, or communicating via Twitter, businesspeople are using new technologies differently than they did even a few years ago.

Torys LLP launched their iPhone app even before MoFo. The app is just one of many ways the firm is connecting with clients, law students, and the general business community.

Taking the lead shows that lawyers and firms are being proactive. I would expect to see see many other firms, large and small, getting into social media and more technological forms of communication in the near future. Gone are the days when a printed newsletter mailed to your office weeks later was the norm. Now, people want their information immediately and in the form of their choosing.

  • FAO: The Lawyer

Out of interest, are there plans for The Lawyer to get an iphone app/mobile optimization? It would be very beneficial for me for one, and am sure many others. I primarily read The Lawyer via the daily email alerts, and having this iphone optimized would make it a far more pleasurable reading experience.

  • The firm should be congratulated, not for the name, which is a bit of faux pas, but for creating a great communication tool for its lawyers spread across a number of offices who can learn about each other and have each other at their fingertips while on the move. This is the sort of app every international knowledge based organisation should have. Our international association of law and accounting firms (MSI Global Alliance) is to soon to launch an app that will allow our members to email each other on the fly, add contacts to their address books, zoom into office locations using Google maps, view each others' profiles etc... This is the way forward, luddites take note!
