MJ Hudson bulks up with hires from CMS and SJ Berwin

Boutique funds firm MJ Hudson has added to its team with the hire of a duo of senior lawyers, including legacy SJ Berwin partner Graham Nicholson.

Nicholson joins MJ Hudson as a consultant, along with CMS Cameron McKenna senior associate Karma Samdup, who has become a partner at the boutique. Samdup will also head up MJ Hudson’s venture capital practice.

Nicholson is the second private equity partner to leave SJ Berwin within a month. Ed Harris was recruited by Hogan Lovells in late October (22 October 2013), just days before SJ Berwin merged with Asian powerhouse King & Wood Mallesons (31 October 2013).

Over the past two years, SJ Berwin has been hit by a number of departures from its funds practice. Consultant Victoria Younghusband became a partner at Speechly Bircham (7 August 2013) and the firm lost two partners (27 July 2011) followed by a team of associates (5 September 2011) to Proskauer Rose in 2011.

The hires are part of a phase of expansion at MJ Hudson. The firm carried out a rare onshore-offshore merger earlier this year when it merged with Jersey firm Verras Law (10 September 2013).

Founding partner Matthew Hudson was a partner at SJ Berwin earlier in his career, leaving in 1998 for fund management company Cabot Square Capital (11 March 1998). Hudson founded the boutique in 2010 (19 July 2010).

Managing partner Eamon Devlin said the latest hires were a “new milestone” in the firm’s growth, and strengthened its capability to advise on mid-market M&A deals.
