Mishcon de Reya is set to offer all of its lawyers the option of working whatever hours they wish on an annual basis.

Mishcon de Reya is set to offer all of its lawyers the option of working whatever hours they wish on an annual basis.

The firm has opened discussions to test reactions to the proposed scheme, which is likely to split lawyers in to three streams: those who work 800 hours, 2,000 hours and those who work somewhere in between.

Managing partner Kevin Gold told The Lawyer: "I think this scheme will get right to the heart of the whole debate on work-life balance.

"People are turning around and saying, 'I don't want to live like you guys - I don't want to be here day-in, day-out and look like a big fat pig at your age and live your life'. And so we're looking at alternative methodologies of dealing with this."

The plan is expected to help women returning to work from maternity leave reintegrate.

"How do you deal with the issues of partnership when people should be judged equally, but there seems to be a disadvantage for those who've taken time out?" Gold asked rhetorically.

If approved, the scheme is likely to go live next year.
