Mishcon bags FFW, Travers duo

Mishcon de Reya has boosted its partnership with the addition of Field Fisher Waterhouse (FFW) IP partner Lewis Cohen and Travers Smith banking partner Michael Bardell.

Cohen is the go-to IP partner for Tottenham Hotspur FC, having advised the club on its crackdown on counterfeit goods being sold over the internet (The Lawyer, 3 March 2008). It is understood that Mishcon will inherit the club as a client, although this has yet to be formalised.

Cohen said Mishcon’s commercial approach to law prompted the move.

“I wasn’t looking to leave, but I was very attracted by the proposition,” he said. “Mishcon’s approach is aligned with my approach – they operate in a businesslike manner.”

It is the second partner loss for FFW in the past week following the exit of trademarks partner France Delord last week, who quit for Taylor Wessing (The Lawyer.com, 7 September).

Mishcon’s corporate and real estate group has been bolstered with the addition of Bardell, who joins the firm after 18 years at Travers.

Bardell advises banks, investment fund managers, private equity houses and corporations on a range of matters.

Mishcon had a successful 2010-11, posting a 30 per cent turnover hike, from £47.5m to £61.5m.
