Minter Ellison adds Nabarro partner to Perth base

Minter Ellison has appointed Nabarro’s international committee chair Michael Hales as a partner in its Perth office.

Hales, who also heads Nabarro’s European group, has been a partner in the City firm’s commercial dispute resolution team since 1996. His practice has a particular focus on international and cross-border cases, ranging from banking, corporate, e-commerce, tax, regulatory and fraud disputes.

Under his tenure as international committee chair Nabarro opened a Singapore office in 2010 and added Spanish firm Roca Junyent to its European alliance network earlier this year.

Admitted as a solicitor in Australia, Hales will be the sixth partner based in Minter Ellison’s Perth office, which was relaunched as a financially integrated part of the firm’s Australian operation in October 2011 (29 September 2011).

The Perth team has grown since the relaunch. In February this year, the firm hired two partners from Australian firm Corrs Chambers Westgarth: Adam Handley and Richard Guit, who are both experienced in energy and resources, infrastructure and project development.

It is understood that Michael Hales’ decision to leave Nabarro and relocate to Perth is partially driven by family reasons. Nabarro is yet to elect the new chair of its international committee.

Apart from Hales, Nabarro saw two other partners leaving in recent months  – Procurement partner Elizabeth Cooper and corporate partner Martin Finnegan, who left to join a boutique firm and set up his own niche practice, respectively.
