There are no shortage of possibilities – Charles Russell, Withers, Wragge & Co, Farrer & Co and Burges Salmon all come to mind – but too much delay will lead to dwindling options. Strategic bolt ons make much more sense than bulking up, for bulking up’s sake (see DWF model). This seems like a sensible move by M&R. They should now integrate the new partners before looking at further consolidation. Mergers borne of genuine strategic drivers are much more likely to succeed than mergers borne of a desire simply to get bigger. You can’t tell me that Bond Dickinson is twice as good a firm as it was before its merger?!
