Lawyers at Mills & Reeve and Taylor Wessing are the most generous when it comes to supporting good causes, but those at Hill Dickinson are least willing to donate from their monthly paycheque, according to new figures.
The research, released by Workplace Giving, a Government run scheme offering tax breaks for employees who donate to charity via the payroll, ranks the UK’s top 50 firms by the number of employees who donate to charity every payday.
South east firm Mills & Reeve topped the league in joint first place alongside Taylor Wessing, with 24.4 per cent of staff using the scheme.
However, just 0.1 per cent of Hill Dickinson employees gave money from their payroll.
Four firms in the UK top 50 - Osborne Clark, Stephenson Harwood, Travers Smith and Holman Fenwick & Willan - have not signed up to the scheme.
Workplace Giving managing director Peter O’ Hara said: “While many law firms offer Workplace Giving, those that top the Legal Giving list are those employers who have actively promoted the scheme to staff, engaging their employees with the benefits of tax-effective giving through their pay, particularly for the higher rate tax payer.”
Allen & Overy and Linklaters were the most generous magic circle firms, with 7.5 and 6.3 per cent of employees using Workplace Giving.
Just 2.1 per cent of Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer staff had signed up, placing the firm 38th in the top 50.

Not that impressive
Taylor Wessing and Mills & Reeve are only the top of a very tightfisted bunch - less than a quarter actually use the scheme!

Mills & Reeve, Taylor Wessing lawyers most philanthropic
What is the point of this article? I am sure many employees at all of these firms donate through a variety of work placed charity events. Who donates what through their payroll is hardly an indicator of philanthropy. Zzzzz.

Praise for ostentatious giving
A lesson from Mark 12:41-44 41 : - "And he sat down over against the treasury, and beheld how the multitude cast money into the treasury: and many that were rich cast in much.
42 And there came a poor widow, and she cast in two mites, which make a farthing.
43 And he called unto him his disciples, and said unto them, Verily I say unto you, This poor widow cast in more than all they that are casting into the treasury: 44 for they all did cast in of their superfluity; but she of her want did cast in all that she had, even all her living."
Shame on you for attempting to disparage those who give in their own ways.
