Kromann & Munter is linking up with Reumert & Partners to create the largest Danish law firm after a wave of mergers which have consolidated the market.
Partners from the leading Danish practices voted after six weeks of talks to merge on 1 January 2000 to create Kromann Reumert. Thomas Kaas, head of Reumert's London office, says: "One of the main reasons for the merger is to help our English and US clients. The merged firms both have strong relationships with London and UK-based clients and Kromann Reumert will continue the commitment to such clients as the only major Danish law firm with offices in London."
Both firms have London offices which will also merge.
Kromann & Munter shares London and Brussels offices with its Scandinavian Law Alliance (VKT) partners Norwegian firm Thommessen Krefting Greve Lund and Swedish firm Vinge.
Kurt Scovlund, Kromann Reumert's chairman, says the VKT collaboration will come to an end in London.
Until then Kaas will co-ordinate the two offices from Reumert premises.
Scovlund says: "Our co-operation will continue in the Scandinavian market as part of the merger agreement."
Per Troen, Danish partner at Osborne Clarke, says the move is seen as a response to the merger of Dragsted & Helmer Nielsen this year with Schluter & Hald and then Aros Advokater, which created Denmark's largest firm Dragsted Schluter Aros.
Reumert is a market leader in the financial area, while Kromann & Munter is a dominant corporate firm.
Kromann Reumert will have 175 lawyers, including 41 partners.
The two firms will continue with international non-exclusive relationships, including membership of Lex Mundi.
