McGrigor Donald records record growth in turnover

McGrigor Donald has announced a record turnover for last year, bringing in a total of £36.6m. This figure is almost a third up on the previous year’s total of £27.25m.

Although managing partner Kirk Murdoch would not elaborate on specific figures, he did say that profits had grown at a higher percentage than turnover, and added that partners were satisfied with the firm’s profits performance. Last year’s average profits per partner stood at £205,000, according to The Lawyer 100 survey.
Murdoch attributed some of the firm’s success to the expansion of its offices in London and Belfast. Of the firm’s four national locations, Glasgow generates the largest share of the firm’s turnover, but it is the London office that proportionally is growing most quickly. Murdoch acknowledged that it is also this office that offers the best inroad to developing an international reputation.
Senior partner Robert Glennie said: “London was always going to be a difficult nut to crack, but we’ve made significant inroads in winning business from major international companies.”
The London office, where 14 of the firm’s 58 partners are situated, has performed particularly well, doubling its fee income in the past four years. Glennie was not prepared to break down the results into individual offices.
Lateral hires by McGrigor Donald’s London office during this bullish year included Anthony Edwards, formerly head of DJ Freeman’s construction practice, and corporate partner David Mandell from Berwin Leighton.
“We’ve had a very good year,” said Murdoch. “There’s been growth across the board, particularly in key sectors, such as corporate work in the technology sector, projects and the international dimension to our business.”
The firm advised both Halifax and the Royal Bank of Scotland on the launch of their respective internet banking facilities, and was subsequently successful in its pitch for similar work for the Bank of Scotland.
Murdoch added that the firm’s international ambitions were also very much on the agenda. He said: “The success of our strategic alliance with Pepper Hamilton, a law firm headquartered in Philadelphia, has resulted in McGrigor Donald currently looking to establish similar alliances on the West Coast of the US, Canada, Germany and the Netherlands.”
