McDermott Will & Emery has hired Jones Day Reavis & Pogue's former Brussels head to its Washington DC office. Antitrust partner Joseph Winterscheid spent 24 years at Jones Day, where he was responsible for setting up the firm's Brussels office in 1989. McDermott has made no secret of its aim to broaden its EU competition practice and with this hire gains European experience in the US. Winterscheid acts for clients on competition matters before the European Commission. McDermott's London senior partner William Charnley said: "He is very, very knowledgeable about the European scene and about a third of his work is Europe-based." However, Charnley said that his firm's much-vaunted plan to open a Brussels office is no nearer with this hire. "Brussels is on the agenda, but for when we can do more than just competition work from there. We're looking at opening other offices in Germany where we also have a strong competition practice. We're seeing both a significant increase in corporate work and ancillary services such as tax and competition in Europe." In the meantime, McDermott is looking to recruit more competition partners and associates in London. Winterscheid's deal portfolio includes handling Johnson Wax Professional's acquisition of DiverseyLever from Unilever, and Alliant Techsystem's acquisition of Boeing Ordnance.
